Goodnight and Sleep Tight (Words/Music by Mike Billingsley, Art by Ed Mount)
When Renee was pregnant with our daughter Alex, I got inspired to write a song that could we could sing as a "goodnight" song. I wanted to come up with something that focused on imagination, dreams and unconditional love. Later that year, I contacted my friend Ed Mount to see if he'd like to draw some pictures based on the lyrics. What he came up with in those early drafts just blew me away. We decided to put a book together.
The President Song (to the tune of "She'll be Coming 'Round the Mountain") - Words by Mike Billingsley
I wrote many of these verses one afternoon while watching my daughter Alex. At that point, she couldn't crawl and our limited options often gave us lots of staring at each other stretches. On this particular day, I realized I couldn't name all of the U.S. Presidents and thought, with the help of an encyclopedia, I should write a song to help me (and others possibly) repair this deficiency.
I'd like to look into this becoming a book of presidential caricatures to accompany the lyrics. It could be useful for anyone, especially little ones, in learning these important names.
The recording below was one of three I made with my good friend Christina Bates (vocals). This one is rock inspired, but there is also one done traditionally and one in a hip hop style. I asked Christina to use her best "teacher's voice" to sing this. Obviously, she would have preferred to rock it out a bit.
The tune and lyrics are below. Any music or history teachers might find this useful in class.
