                            Compost Band

                            Picture
Compost is a sextet of keys/accordion/trumpet, guitar, bass, drums, sax, and bone.  Initially this group started as a vehicle to play my new acoustic-based originals.  Different from Mama Winslow, I wanted to "compose" more for this group and chart as much as I could.  Therefore, the musicians needed to be able to not only groove and solo, but READ.  In order to be able to do more than just a set of originals, I set about arranging some old-school hip hop tunes in the style of Compost.  (Compost = Each tune demonstrates some connection with jazz - mostly that of New Orleans. Also, we like to take tunes to unexpected places and, as the more literal 'compost' aspect, use and re-use material related to the tune we are playing.)  The repertoire of covers continues to grow week by week with the help of bassist/arranger Chris Slone.  We've moved beyond just rap covers, but like to think that's the roots of our cover endeavors.  All said, I'm really excited about the future of playing our originals with or without the covers by their side.
